Plein Air Arts Festival and Exhibit
Stop by the Depot to view our Plein Air Arts Exhibit which runs through August 30th, 2010. Both our Veeder and Vogel Galleries house artwork from the festival that is available for purchase. The are 104 outstanding pieces on display.
2010 AWARD WINNERS

The Red Wing Arts Association sponsored the 4th Annual Red Wing Plein Air Art Festival from June 21 – 26th, 2010. In plein air painting, artists paint outdoors and create pictures from an outdoor setting. Artists were located throughout the Red Wing area. During the festival, special painting and community events were scheduled.
The event ended on Saturday, June 26, 2010 with a reception, show and sale of the plein air artwork in the Depot gallery. The public was warmly welcomed to the Gala Reception from 6-9 PM on Saturday, June 26th. The artists were introduced, awards were given and the artwork is available to purchase through August 30, 2010.

2010 Event Schedule June 21 - 26

The 4th Annual Red Wing Plein Air Arts Festival, June 21 - 26, 2010
The Festival is a week-long outdoor painting event with art activities scheduled each day:
- Monday – *Welcoming breakfast for Plein Air Artists (8:30 AM Smokey Row Café)
Open paint during the day; “Summer Solstice Paint” Monday evening
- Tuesday –* “Paint the Town”, painting various scenes in historic Red Wing
- Wednesday – Open Paint through the day. * “Paint the Park”, artists painting in Central Park during the kick-off of the Summer Concert Series. The artists will be introduced people will have the opportunity to observe them painting that evening.
- Thursday – “Paint the Valley”, painting anywhere within 10 miles of the Depot Gallery
- Friday – “Off the Beaten Path”, painting in unexpected locations. Suggested sites will be provided or find your own.
- Friday, 5 PM Turn in 3 paintings for the gallery show.
- *Saturday – “Quick Paint”, a 2 hour painting competition held on the Mississippi River Front - meet at Depot Gallery at 9 AM, competition begins at 10 AM ends at 12:00.
- *Grand opening reception held Saturday evening
- Sunday - Plein Air Art Gallery Show begins June 27 and ends Sunday August 29.
*Activities highly recommended for participating plein air artists
Participation: The Plein Air Arts Festival is juried to include 25 artists. Prizes are awarded for Best in Show, People’s Choice, Artist’s Choice and Quick Paint. Each artist submits 4 paintings for the show.

Plein Air Pastel Workshop
Monday, June 21 10 AM - 1 PM Fred Somers was one of the Red Wing plein air workshop presenters last year. He has been painting full-time at his farm-home-studio in Northfield, Minnesota. His oil and pastel paintings are known for their peaceful sensitivite reflections of themes from the land. He is one of 30 artists work-wide named to the International Association of Pastel Societies Masters Circle and has won numerous honors including the Ruth Richeson Grand Prize in Pastel Journal Magazine's Annual Pastel 100. He also continues top inspire others through his painting workshops in the U.S. and abroad.
Plein Air Oil Workshop
Wednesday, June 23rd, 8:30 AM – Noon
Presenting Artist: Robert Hodges-Bonawitz
Robert Bonawitz is a plein air painter, muralist and an expert with all facets of fresco. He studied with Richard Lack at the Atelier Lack in Minneapolis where he won two gold medals. Robert’s work was selected “Best of Show” at the Red Wing Plein Air Art Festival.
Plein Air Watercolor Workshop
Thursday: 8:30 – Noon
Presenting Artist: Dan Wiemer
Dan Wiemer is an award winning artist from Red Wing, Minnesota. He was trained as a graphic designer and has been painting in water media most of his career. Dan is past present of the Minnesota Watercolor Society and has taught classes and workshops for the past 20 years. Dan was recently in China for three weeks on an artist exchange program. There he taught western watercolor as well as learned from his eastern counterparts. He couldn’t speak the language, but he could communicate through his watercolor, and that translated well!
