Gallery Exhibitions

RWAA has two individual galleries at the Depot that are light, open and full of exciting artwork throughout the year.  Over ten dynamic art shows each year feature all mediums and styles of fine art.  The galleries are open to the public seven days a week with free admission. Check out our Red Wing Arts Association Events Calendar for information about current and upcoming shows.

Our Plein Air (open air) Art Exhibit is ongoing in both galleries through August 29th.

The Marjorie Gray Vogel Gallery
Marjorie Gray Vogel is the founder of the Red Wing Arts Association over 50 years ago.  She is still an active member of the association and serves on the Board of Directors.  The featured and larger shows are displayed in this Gallery.

"Cleaning the Beach, Haitian, 1"by Mike Schad

About the Artist - Mike Schad lives at the “end of the road” in rural southeastern Minnesota with his wife, Connie, and their cats, Big Guy and Little Guy.

Schad’s work has been in one-man shows and several multi-artist exhibitions, and his drawings and paintings are in numerous private and corporate collections.  He works in a studio on the premises and executes his paintings in a variety of mediums including oil, pastel and watercolor.  While figurative work is his main focus, he occasionally gets out to work from whatever nature has to offer.

From 1990 to the present, Mike has been a staff illustrator for “Midwest Fly Fishing”.  He served on the Board of Directors at the “Rochester Art Center” in Rochester, MN and is currently president of the “Greenwood Prairie Art League” in Plainview, MN, where he helps organize exhibits in the art gallery.  Schad has studied art at numerous colleges around the Midwest and attended several workshops at the “Scottsdale Artists School” in Scottsdale, AZ.  He currently teaches figure and portrait workshops at “Crossings at Carnegie” in Zumbrota, MN.

Artist Statement:  Places and events are remembered in fragments but have a feeling of completeness.  This fragmentation of space and memory is the foundation for my work. A collection of photographs, information from conversations or texts, objects and spaces from my surroundings, are all used to create nonlinear narratives that revolve around one idea or place.

My recent paintings focus on rural America and are influenced by the relationship of rural vs. urban communities, the development of ethanol and GMO, and misconceptions and stereotypes of rural living mixed in with my own experience of being raised on a farm.  I am interested in the line between representation and abstraction, truth and fiction, and how perceptions of the world are dictated by one’s experience and expectations.  All of these thoughts are developing into images with symbols of personal and cultural significance that are not meant to illustrate one particular event, but are open to interpretation.
